Background Information
This is an episode of a series demonstrating China's achievement of its forty years' reform through the narratives of forty figures of different nationality and professional spheres. Hong Kong's ex-CE C.Y. Leung is the narrator in this episode where he recalls his own engagement in the forty years' reform, commends China's rapid advancement, and promotes the conception of Greater Bay Area. The series is made by China Daily (a mouthpiece of Chinese government aiming at foreigners) and uploaded on youtube in Oct. 2018.
Technique Used
Simplify Ideas
This is propaganda because
This video, obviously, is flattering Chinese government and its economic achievement.
The technique in this example is widely used in the propaganda materials about China's development: bombarding the audience with the greatness of China's hard power (economic data) while never talking about the soft aspects (politics, human rights, culture, and etc.) It simplifies China's trajectory in recent forty years as expansion/rise/advancement in economy while never touches upon the inertia of political progress and bad human rights records, in order to make people people believe that "China Model" means rise of living standards while neglect the negative part of it.
This is harmful. Because it frustrates people's possibly more objective understanding of China — China is not about a miracle of rapid economic growth but also stands for a systemic oppression of basic human rights.
