Anti plastic plastic bags
Background Information
During 2014 the advertising agency BBDO Malaysia came up with a very interesting and impressive ad campaign. BBDO created an ad with people holding a plastic bag with an animal printed on it. When the person holds the bag it looks as if the person is killing the animal by holding it "by the neck."
Technique Used
Simplify Ideas
This is propaganda because
It simplifies the idea of plastic bags killing ocean animals due to humans littering. There are so many themes about climate change conveyed through one simple image well-positioned on a plastic bag. Furthermore, it also activates emotion as well by conveying an image of animal cruelty by the careful positioning of the animal's neck right where the person carries the bag. The advertisements are trying to influence public opinion from passive to active in combating climate change by putting a strong message on an everyday item and causing emotional impact.
It is beneficial because it helps educate people on the true scale of plastic pollution and how it can lead to consequences of we ignore it more. Additionally, the image of an animal being held on the neck potentially leads to the person holding the bag not wanting to buy it anymore since he doesn't want to be viewed as some evil person who kills animals by thoughtlessly using bags without care.
