When You Smoke

Background Information
This ad reads, "When you smoke, it shows." This is a public service ad that shows a woman who seems to be a bit like a Frankenstein or vampire, with distorted mouth and eyes.
Technique Used
Activate Emotion
This is propaganda because
The activation of disgust is one of the strongest of human emotions. When you feel disgust at the image of the woman, this feeling may transfer to the act of smoking. Connecting feelings and ideas is a way to persuade.

This is very beneficial in scaring individuals based on what cigarettes can do for their appearance. Especially in today's society, we base a lot off of how we look. Our world is based on appearances, and this ad targets how people may look “ugly” if they smoke. It also has a number right on the page to call. A pretty simple and easy way to get help if someone needs it. No hidden message, no hidden solution.
