This is a meme about the United Kingdom's decision to withdraw from the European Union, colloquially known as Brexit (short for "British Exit"). While the UK's membership status within the EU has been a long-standing topic of debate in the country for decades, the public interest surrounding the issue saw an unprecedented resurgence during the months leading up to its EU referendum in June 2016. The referendum ended with 51,9% of the voters voting to leave the European Union.

    Immigration was of course not the only deciding issue for many Brits voting to leave the EU, but this meme captures some of the absurdity of the decision.

    I see it as humour. It could be harmful if a reader did not see the generalization of it to be humour but took the words seriously as facts.

    Is this beneficial? It depends on the perspective. It greatly simplifies a complex situation, making a comparison which isn't very nuanced. However, it brings across a message in a very effective manner.

    This is definitely oversimplified information, but: it doesn't harm British nor immigrants. The used stereotypes aren't dangerous. As any piece of humour: a good start.

    According to me, there might me some confusion in the definition of harmful/beneficial. In my view, something is harmful when there are some harmed people/victims (here, the British people who are stereotyped). The question should make more distinction between harmful, beneficial AND relevant, which is something else. Saying that "things have to be said" relates to relevance but not to beneficial, according to me. But my interpretation may be biased by my knowledge of these terms in English. :)

    I agree with Eva's point in the first comment and voted somewhat harmful. Immigrants were not the only reason but indeed the meme 'captures some of the absurdity of the decision' and may initiate questions.

    This is too simplified, and doesn't show the real impact and decisions of the vote. Even if it shows the paradoxal acting of GB, it's dangerous because it divides.

    This type of message is probably shared in social media. So it will end up in some filter bubble and an echo chamber of like minded. The level of assertions is so questionable, that there probably won’t follow any beneficial dialogue about the real causes of Brexit.
