South Korean Loudspeaker Broadcasts

Achtergrondinformatie
Although dismantled in 2018, South Korea had been using loudspeakers at the DMZ to broadcast propaganda across the border into North Korea for decades. They used to broadcast everything from Kpop (which is banned in the North) to criticism of the poverty and human rights abuses in the North. The North Koreans have responded with their own form of loudspeaker propaganda, blaring communist music and a eulogy of its “great leader" towards the south.

Dit is propaganda omdat
The broadcast's objective was to persuade the North Korean soldiers at the border to doubt their own regime or even defect. The South Korean government hoped that its propaganda barrage would undermine the cult of personality surrounding the ruling Kim family in the North. Pyongyang considers the speakers a huge threat as they believe it caused the "Korean Wave" in the North, as they saw a significant increase in South Korean pop-cultural ideas and products e.g. dramas and movies smuggled across the border in recent decades.
